Heads Up Display Windshields: Features and Benefits

Heads up display or HUD, is a feature which saves the driver from constantly moving their line of sight from the road to know about important details about the vehicle. It projects all the necessary information available on the dashboard to the windshield in real time, directly on the visual side of the driver. Auto glass windshield manufacturers incorporate many features into HUDs. This blog post goes over everything there is to know about HUD windshields.

What Are the Components of a HUD?

Heads up display windshields are manufactured with a special interlayer allowing it to capture information and projected it with the help of a projector kept behind the dashboard. This digital transparent image utilizes multi-coloured signs to display all the data on your windshield.

Initially only found in military vehicles, this technology extended into commercial cars when the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme was invented in 1988. In 2019, it is more commonly found in sports and luxury vehicles. The BMW 3 Series was the first European car to have this feature integrated and mass marketed.

There are usually two types of HUD available:

1. Combiner Glass HUD: This type uses a partially reflective screen like glass which displays the information to the driver.

2. Windscreen HUD: This type directly projects the information onto the windshield.

HUDs are adaptive to any kind of visibility conditions. The projector uses any of the three available types of light emitting sources to project the image onto the windshield. These types are: Cathode Ray Tube, Light Emitting Diode (LED) or Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). They also use reflection to enhance readability.

Keeping these in mind, a HUD can be projected in two places.

1. Look Up Version: Where the projection is displayed on the upper part of the windshield, in line with the roof when you are in the driver’s seat.

2. Look Down Version: Where the projection is displayed on the lower part of the windshield, in line with the steering wheel.

The information visible on HUD includes:

  • Current speed of the vehicle
  • Speed limit information for the road/highway
  • Lane departure warning
  • Cruise control
  • Navigation in augmented reality
  • Radio, podcast and music channels which can be accessed with the help of Wi-Fi
  • Connection to Bluetooth and access to 3 Wi-Fi cameras which activates road view on reverse gear and indicators

What Are the Benefits of Installing a HUD Windshield?

HUDs offer a number of benefits to drivers including:

1. It improves safety while driving by projecting the details directly on the driver’s focal point.
